Empowering Girls with Computer Programming skills ‘Today for leadership tomorrow’
GWC works to educated inspire and equip young women with the skills and resources to pursue academic and career opportunities in computing fields.
At Girls Who Code, our work starts and ends with our girls. We are committed to designing quality programs and products that reflect the diversity of the girls that we serve. We approach our work with humility, curiosity, and an open mind. Our work equips, inspires and educates girls to use technology to change the world.
Local professional women (Society of Women Engineers, IT professionals) in STEM fields facilitate the class and serve as role models, project leaders, and guest speakers. Students also go field trips to STEM companies in the region as resources and time permit.
As a central part of the Club experience, girls work with one another on an Impact Project, where they use computer science to solve a problem relevant to their Club and community. Through this project, girls learn teamwork and leadership, while also learning the fundamental computer science concepts that form the basis for all computer programming languages: loops, variables, conditionals and functions.
Here are some example of past projects: Trivia Mobile App, Baking Instructions Website etc.
- At the beginning of the year, the students will work on a simple club contract that will provide guiding principles as they work a team and accomplish the learning objectives
- Students also get a chance to experiment with interactive, software controlled hardware exercises.
- At the end of the year, students get to present to families and friends their accomplishments during the year!
- They celebrate the successes with a class party!
